Cervical Cancer STD

Published on Jun 11 2010, in the categories: Causes, statistics

Cervical cancer is a highly preventable type of cancer and not only can women diagnose it even before it develops but they can also easily prevent it through a balanced lifestyle and a careful monitoring of their health. There's also a vaccine available that fights off HPV strains 16 and 18. These two out of many other HPV strains have been linked to more than 90% of the cases of cervical cancer. They have been shown to disrupt the balance of normal cells replacing rates by making them grow and divide out of control or by causing warts and other precancerous lesions. Soon enough the cancerous cells constitute solid masses known as tumors that can grow and spread to other parts of the body limiting treatment and reducing the chances for survival.

HPV, The Human Papiloma Virus, is a sexually transmitted virus that is popularly believed to be the cause for cervical cancer. However, though it is present in 90% o the cancers and can lead to warts and displasya, not all its strains are harmful and there's still a percentage of women that develop the cancer without being infected with the virus. We could better say that HPV is one of the most important risk factors in developing cervical cancer.

The link to HPV has gained a reputation for cervical cancer that relates it to STD (sexually transmitted diseases). This just adds to the stigmatization of cervical cancer patients and is very harmful through the fact that it can make people link it to promiscuity and patients to feel ashamed. Some young women have even been found not to have admitted the infection to her parents and it useless to stress what this could mean for somebody in terms of complications and dysplasia left untreated.

It's true that HPV is sexually transmissive and that it can also be transmitted through other kinds of sexual relations, not just the the usual sexual intercourse. You can get it from oral sex and anal sex just as easily. Sure enough, you should be careful and realize that multiple sexual partners and unprotected sex can increase your risks for developing the cancer. Even using protection can sometimes not be enough to keep you from becoming infected with HPV so the wisest thing would be a balanced sex life and careful choices of partners.

Though you can risk a lot by dismissing sexual intercourse as a cause leading to cancer, there's always the choice for regular screening tests that can make HPV infections harmless by detecting them or a precancerous condition early, at a point where they are 100% curable. Still, close to 13,500 women develop cervical cancer every year and approximately 4,500 of them die from it. By taking no chances and by choosing a lifestyle that shows you are grateful for your health and aware of the dangers lurking around, you can have a cancer free life. Don't be too quick to judge others either. Cervical cancer should unite women and not banish the ones struggling with it. If you make it anything close to a tabu, screening will drop and incidence will rise again.

Smoking Survival After Diagnosis Of Cervical Cancer

Published on Jun 08 2010, in the categories: Stages of disease, statistics

Cervical cancer is the cancer of the cervix, the passage way between the uterus and the vagina, and it consists in cells beginning to divide and grow out of control and forming a mass called a tumor. This tumor can become invasive and spread to surrounding tissue and eventually to other organs and parts of the body.

Because HPV, a sexually transmitted virus, is the main condition leading to cervical cancer, Pap smears that detect it and lesions present on the cervix have become primary tools to prevent or offer early diagnose of the cancer. However, HPV is not present in 100% of the cases so it cannot be established as a direct and exclusive cause for cervical cancer. We must be aware of the existence of other risk factors that can make us more exposed to developing cervical cancer.

Pack of cigarettes, close-up

The second most harmful thing for the cervix and a cause for cervical cancer is smoking.  The risk also increases the bigger the number of years the woman has smoked. The reason behind this is that the chemicals contained by cigarette smoke can be very harmful for the cells in the cervix. Contrary to popular belief, these can affect more organs other than the lungs. They are absorbed through the lungs and then the bloodstream spreads them throughout the body. This has been proven by cervical mucus tests that have found traces of tobacco by-products. These substances not only weaken your resistance to cancer but are also a reason for the developing of cancerous cells and encourage the infection with HPV to lead to lesions and precancerous conditions.

Women who are smokers have double the risk of developing cervical cancer compared to non-smokers. The exact relationship between smoking and cervical cancer however still holds some mysteries for the medical community. Even so, another undisputed fact is that smoking can also inhibit the immune system. All in all, smoking is at least a major risk factor and significantly reduces survival rates in smokers struggling with cervical cancer. The idea that cigarette smoke can also directly cause abnormal changes of the cervix cells that are likely to then become cancerous remains a very probable theory. Even second hand smoke can affect survival after diagnosis of cervical cancer and has been proven through medical research to be an important risk factor that increases the chance of developing cervical neoplasia.

Not smoking as well as limiting your exposure to second hand smoke is sure to help you prevent cervical cancer or can give you higher chances for survival if you are already struggling with it. Ask your doctor of ways of minimizing your risks and about other harmful effects of smoking and exposure to second hand smoke.

Cervical Cancer Prevelant In Younger Patients

Published on May 21 2010, in the categories: statistics

Though not too long ago teenagers seemed no more susceptible to cervical cancer than women over 20, recent studies have shown an increasing incidence of the cancer in teenagers. As a matter of fact, while rates of incidence are going down for adult women, they are rising more and more every year among girls between 15 and 19 years old.
<-336x280 Large Rectangle - center->
A recent British study has concluded that between 1979 and 2003 the incidence of cervical cancer among the younger women studied with ages between 15 and 24 by 1,6% per year. A closer examination of the data gathered showed that people aged 15 to 19 were actually what triggered that increase with a rate going up 6,8%.

What makes this information even worse is the fact that medical research shown that the cancer usually develops much rapidly among young women. However, this area of research has not been given full attention so there might be some factors in the sub-group that have determined these findings. Research has also been known to neglect teenagers as a study group. It's not that teenagers are more reluctant to present themselves to such studies but often enough are not given the chance to participate.

Another thing that makes teenagers more exposed to cervical cancer is the fact that they are more likely to become infected with HPV. The Human Papilloma Virus does not unavoidably lead to dysplasia and finally cancer but it is a virus present in 90% of cervical cancer victims. It is transmitted sexually so if teenagers aren't properly informed they are more likely to act irresponsible and not use protection. Starting you sexual life very early also increases risks of cancer.

Another risk factor is also determined by the way teenagers think. It's fact that people still stigmatize cervical cancer as a shameful disease because they relate it ti promiscuity. Teenagers who know this prejudice are most likely not to admit to having been infected with the virus and this can leave a possible cancer untreated. It is vital that cervical cancer is diagnosed in a early stage, when it is still 100% curable.

Teenagers are also not the ones hurrying to get the Pap test and usually wait until they are adults to worry about this. Parents have shown constant difficulty and immaturity in handling this issue. It is often difficult for parents to see their children as young adults exposed to similar risks and especially to see them sexually active.

While doctors are still searching for  research funds, some people think all money should be spent on vaccination against the virus. This might be right but an equal distribution of funds should be a wiser idea as it can improve chances for better and more effective treatments adapted to every group of age.

Cervical Cancer Statistics By Age Group

Published on Apr 20 2010, in the categories: Useful info, statistics

In 2010, in the 21th century the disease that does most human victims is the cancer. Until now, the doctors and the specialists who study this disease weren’t able to discover a cure. Unfortunately this disease doesn’t forgive anyone no matter the age or sex. There are underdeveloped countries that don’t have a developed sanitary system, hospitals and last technology equipment and because they are poor they cannot afford to go in other developed countries to benefit of the treatment and specialists. So, they die, because they don’t have the money to save their lives. For everyone is difficult and painful to see a love one dying in front of your eyes and to not be able to help him. But, that’s life.<-336x280 Large Rectangle - center->
Cervical cancer statistics have been made by age groups, by stage, by incidence, mortality in different countries of the world, by male or female incidence, etc. In 2006, a statistic made in the U.K. on the invasive carcinoma of the cervix that showed that 2873 new cases of cervical cancer were diagnosed, accounting approximately 2% of all types of cancers that affect women. According to the graphic, the age-standardized (European) annual incidence rate of cervical cancer in U.K. is 8,5 per 100,000 women. The invasive cervical cancer is evenly spread across age groups over 25 years, the rate is highest for the 30-39 age group, approximately 17 per 100,000 women. Cervical cancer is divided in fallowing stages:
-stage 1 – divided in 1a and 1b, the cancer cells have small dimensions and are located only into the cervix;
-stage 2 – divided in 2a and 2b, the cancer cells became bigger and start to spread into the surrounding tissues;
-stage 3 – the cancer cells spreads into the pelvis;
-stage 4 – is the most advanced stage of the disease and affects other organs of the body.
The survival cervical cancer rate depends on stage of the disease at diagnosis. Two thirds of the tumors is represented by the cervical cancer in stage 1. More detailed analysis of the cervical cancer cases with an unknown stage prove that the older women have a bigger ratio of cervical cancer cases with unknown stage than younger women. The young women who have cervical cancer with unknown stage have a good survival chance, while the older women who have cervical cancer with unknown stage have a poor survival chance.

Human papilloma virus is the main cause of the cervical cancer. The difference between international countries rates are determined by the prevalence of the Human Papilloma virus and because of other factors such us pills or smoking. Many of the developed countries have decided to take measures in order to decrease the cervical cancer cases, they introduced screening programs that in time had proven to have positive results.

The states and the organizations should develop information campaigns, screening programs, free medical analysis and allocate more founds to help women to prevent the appearance of these disease. It is always better to prevent than to treat.

Cervical Cancer Rates

Published on Apr 01 2010, in the categories: statistics

The cervical cancer are among the tumors (malignant) most common. But the vast majority of women who were diagnosed with this disease are completely cured. Because the tumors tend to grow slowly. Women are encouraged to have regular Pap tests (Pap smear), which allows early detection of tumors, thereby leaving ample time to treat them in many cases.
<-336x280 Large Rectangle - center->
Young women aged 9 to 26 years can also reduce their risk of cervical cancer by getting vaccinated against this type of cancer. The recommendations on the frequency of screening vary from one province to another. All provincial programs target women aged 18 to 69 years.

cervical-cancer-rates

During a typical year, about 1 450 women in Canada are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and about 430 will not survive. Most women who die are in the older group, cancer and most of them have been detected whereas it had already spread. This kind of situation is not likely to happen if you do not undergo regular Pap smears. Since the implementation of Pap smears in 1941, the death rate from cervical cancer has fallen by 90%. The Pap smear can detect those at risk of contracting cervical cancer in the near future, so this allows doctors to take steps to prevent the disease from appearing.

The tissues of the cervix are particularly vulnerable to abnormal changes, and many women have tumors or neoplasms (new growths) in these areas of the genitals. Only a small number of these changes are actually cancerous. Some are benign, which means they do not multiply and spread to other organs, and therefore they are not cancerous. Others are thought to be precancerous and may require surgical treatment similar to that set out to cure the cancer itself.Many women who, frankly, do not have cancer still need the care of an oncologist (a doctor specializing in cancer treatment).

cervical-cancer-rates-2

Prevention of cancer may require a range of diagnostic and surgical procedures that take a long time. Similarly, women who have been cured of cervical cancer often need further treatment, especially if radiation was used. The method of prevention is the most recent vaccination against 4 types of HPV most common. HPV, or human papillomavirus is a virus that getts pessed on thru sex that can cause cervical cancer and other health problems. The vaccine protects against HPV types that cause about 70% of all cervical cancers. It is a very effective method to reduce the possibility of developing many diseases caused by human papillomavirus. The vaccination is available for young women ages 9 to 26 years.
Causes

We do not yet understand very well what triggers uncontrolled division of cells that eventually form a tumor, but some features seen in people with cancer shed light on risk factors.

Infection plays a major role in cancer of the cervix.
