Cervical cancer is cancer of the passageway between the uterus and the vagina, also called the cervix. This type of cancer is very easy to prevent and to treat as long as it is detected early. A Pap screening can detect any cancerous or precancerous conditions and can send you off to treatment in no time. An HPV vaccine could also be your major weapon against cervical cancer.

However, invasive cervical cancer is a completely different matter. This disease is much harder to deal with and a lot more difficult to treat. Treatment ranges from standard like surgery, chemo, radiations therapy and complementary or alternative treatments like herbal therapies, natural remedies, integrative treatments and so on.

diet-and-cervical-cancer

However, these last ones are not advised to replace conventional treatments an even if you take them as complementary treatment you should ask your doctor about their impact on the other parts of your therapies as they could make them less efficient.

In the case of cervical cancer, as far as complementary and integrative treatment is concerned the CAAT(Controlled Amino Acid Therapy) is the most commonly used therapy and it's a blend between medical science and dieting. Actually, CAAT is more that just a diet and more like an amino acid, carbohydrate and glucose reduction protocol. The idea is to starve the cancer cells to death. Many clinical trials are being done using this protocol and they have all reported great success.

diet-and-cervical-cancer-2

CAAT is a a diet meant to control the amino acid intake and it is realized by replacing certain foods in the patient's daily food with scientifically supported formula of amino acid. A strictly configured food plan must accompany the the amino acid formula as not to render it useless.

CAAT can work successfully alone to a certain extent but it is best used in addition to conventional cancer treatments. With chemotherapy it can even enhance its benefits while lessening their toxic effects.

The phases of integrative therapy with CAAT and dieting includes three phases: CAAT formulation, daily food intake and the last phase consists in nutritional supplements. The CAAT formulation can be greatly enhanced though the consumption of fructose and vinegar for example. These have acetic acid properties and help block glycosis, putting an end to the energy supply for the cancer cells.

Elements of phase three can include: parsley, vitamin D, green tea extract, anti-oxidants, whey protein, grits, tocotrienols and many others. Ask your doctor for a customized CAAT formula and the proper diet and supplements for your case as each case can require different therapies.

What makes CAAT a very promising area of cancer treatment as it is a therapy that attacks and terminates cancerous cells while not disrupting the functioning of healthy, normal cells.

Stage 2 cervical cancer

Published on Jun 22 2010, in the categories: Causes, cervical cancer

Cervical cancer early diagnosis and staging are essential in treating and overcoming this disease. Cervical cancer, as most types of cancer, shown no early symptoms that could warn you of the progress of the disease. However, it remains one of the easiest to prevent forms of cancer, by taking regular Pap screenings and monitoring you health state. This can give you the chance to detect any abnormalities even before they turn malignant and you have a 100% chance of curing such precancerous condition, also known as dysplasia.
<-336x280 Large Rectangle - center->
Staging the cancer is also essential is developing the correct treatment plan as cervical cancer in different stages responds differently to the same type of treatment. The more advanced the stage the less effective the treatment and the poorer the survival prognosis. Cervical cancer goest through 4 stages from being non-invasive to reaching metastasis.

stage-2-cervical-cancer

For example, if stage 1 cervical cancer is diagnosed the tumor can be removed through surgery but if stage 2 is diagnosed treatments can include surgery but are most likely to depend on chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Stage 2 cervical cancer is the one of which Pap screenings have been most effective in reducing incidence. The staging indicates how far the cancer has spread and in this case, the cancer is likely to have grown beyond the cervix and uterus without spreading yet to the walls of the pelvis. This stage can be further divided into two other phases. Stage 2A implies that the cancer has not spread into the tissue surrounding the cervix but is possible to have reached the upper part of the vagina. Lymph nodes however have not been affected yet and neither have other distant sites. For a more accurate diagnosis and approach, stage 2A can also be divided into stage 2A1 and stage 2A2. In the first one the tumor is not larger than 4 cm while in the other the tumor is bigger than 4 cm but both haven't spread to the lymph nodes. Stage 2B indicates that the cancer has spread to the tissues surrounding the cervix but has still remained limited as far as reaching lymph nodes or other distant sites is concerned.

Treatment for this stage is mainly based on chem otherapy and radiation therapy. Prognosis for this stage is poorer than for the preceeding stages but it still offers a good chance for treatment.

stage-2-cervical-cancer

In most cases, stage 2 cervical cancer is cancer affecting the surrounding tissue and it offers a different prognosis for each of its secondary stages. The women that have been diagnosed with stage 2A cervical cancer have a 5-year survival rate of 70% to 90%, which basically means that 7 or 9 out of then will survive through treatment. For stage 2B, the statistics are lower. The 5-year survival rate can drop to 60 or 70%, meaning that only 6 or 7 from women diagnosed with it will survive.

How can you diagnose cervical cancer?

Progress in cervical cancer treatment and diagnosis have worked miracles with reducing cancer incidence in the last decades. Cervical cancer is a cancer of the cervix, the passage-way between the vagina and the uterus. The cervix is very important in giving life to babies but also in finding pleasure in sexual intercourse. When cells in its tissue begin to divide and grow out of control cancer begins to develop and soon enough these cells group into solid masses called tumors.

Later on they can break away and use the bloodstream or the lymphatic system to reach more distant parts of the organs where they develop secondary tumors. This process takes a long time to happen and our best chance of detecting it early or even preventing it are regular Pap screenings.

Risk factors that can lead to abnormalities in the cells of the cervix that can develop into cancer include: smoking, early first period, late menopause, not having a baby before 30, multiple sex partners, unprotected sexual intercourse and HPV infections. This last factor has been found in 90% of cervical cancers and it viewed by many as a primary cause for cervical cancer. However, only two strains from this virus can lead to cancer so many women can be infected but are under no risk at all. The Papanicolau test is the best way of detecting this virus as well as any abnormalities already present in the cervix.

Such pre-cancerous conditions like warts or dysplasia are 100% curable. Other methods of diagnosis include pelvic examinations and a digene HPV test can be done to women over 30, which detects high-risk HPV infections. Inconclusive Pap tests can also be followed by other specialized procedures like colposcopy or biopsy.

The average age recommended for starting with the regular Pap screenings is 18 but it is also a good idea to start with them right after you become sexually active. The Pap smear should be done once every year.

The first procedure done when you schedule yourself for a medical examination if you suspect cervical cancer is the pelvic examination. Through this procedure, the vagina and surrounding organs are examined by the doctor. He looks at these using a speculum and inserting it into the vagina and then and palpates them by inserting his or her fingers into the vagina an the other hand on the abdomen.

If his or her suspicions are confirmed you'll probably need to do a Pap test too. This is simple procedure through which cells from your cervix are smeared onto a glass slide and studied under a microscope.

If cervical lesions are present a colposcopy can confirm diagnosis and if invasive cancer is suspected a cone biopsy or an endocervical curretage can be undergone. After these tests the doctor needs to establish the stage of the cancer and this can be done through a series of other specialized tests and imaging procedures like chest x-rays, CT scans, cystoscopy and blood tests.

Cervical Cancer Adenocarcinoma

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the cervix. This is the passageway between the vagina and the uterus and it plays an important part during pregnancy. Women who don't want to have babies are still under its influence since it has a significant impact on a woman's ability to be pleasured through sexual intercourse.

As with most cancers, cervical cancer is caused by an out of control growth of the cells that make up the cervix, especially those in the lining of the cervix. As they begin to grow, divide and spread some abnormalities can be detected at first and then solid masses form also known as tumors.

cervical-cancer-adenocarcinoma

From these, cancer cells can break away and travel through the blood stream or the lymph system to other parts of the body. If diagnosed while these abnormalities are pre-cancerous cervical cancer can be 100% prevented. The best way to detect pre-cancerous conditions also known as dysplasia is through regular Pap screening.

If cervical cancer develops before it is detected it can take two forms: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. The first one it the most common type of cervical cancer while adenocarcinoma only accounts for 10% of all cervical cancers.

cervical-cancer-by-age-group-21

Adenocarcinoma, though less common, poses still a significant threat for all women. The fact that is is less common makes it even more difficult to deal with. Actually, in recent years, adenocarcinoma has become slightly more common for unknown reasons. This type of cervical cancer develops in the cells that line the glands of the cervix that produce mucus. Even less common is when this cancer begins in the supportive tissue around the cervix.

This type of cancer is treated in the same way though some secondary types generated by it can show a much poorer prognosis. If diagnosed in its early stages it can be removed through surgery. The success or the degree of invasiveness of the procedure depends on the stage of the cancer. Women in an early stage have the choice for surgery that allows them to hold a pregnancy in the future, such as the LEEP procedure or the cone biopsy.

Vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy are called for in more advanced stages. These prevent the woman from having anymore babies and don't have such a high success rate and a low risk of relapse as the others. With each stage the cancer goes through the procedures become more invasive and for the last stage, right before metastasis the 5-year survival rate is around 20%.

Additional adjuvant therapies might also be recommended. Radiation therapy can also be administered before operation, to shrink the tumor, or after, to kill any remaining cancerous cells and to minimize the risk of relapse. Chemotherapy can also considerably reduce risks of relapse.

Cervical Cancer STD

Published on Jun 11 2010, in the categories: Causes, statistics

Cervical cancer is a highly preventable type of cancer and not only can women diagnose it even before it develops but they can also easily prevent it through a balanced lifestyle and a careful monitoring of their health. There's also a vaccine available that fights off HPV strains 16 and 18. These two out of many other HPV strains have been linked to more than 90% of the cases of cervical cancer. They have been shown to disrupt the balance of normal cells replacing rates by making them grow and divide out of control or by causing warts and other precancerous lesions. Soon enough the cancerous cells constitute solid masses known as tumors that can grow and spread to other parts of the body limiting treatment and reducing the chances for survival.

HPV, The Human Papiloma Virus, is a sexually transmitted virus that is popularly believed to be the cause for cervical cancer. However, though it is present in 90% o the cancers and can lead to warts and displasya, not all its strains are harmful and there's still a percentage of women that develop the cancer without being infected with the virus. We could better say that HPV is one of the most important risk factors in developing cervical cancer.

cervical-cancer-std

The link to HPV has gained a reputation for cervical cancer that relates it to STD (sexually transmitted diseases). This just adds to the stigmatization of cervical cancer patients and is very harmful through the fact that it can make people link it to promiscuity and patients to feel ashamed. Some young women have even been found not to have admitted the infection to her parents and it useless to stress what this could mean for somebody in terms of complications and dysplasia left untreated.

It's true that HPV is sexually transmissive and that it can also be transmitted through other kinds of sexual relations, not just the the usual sexual intercourse. You can get it from oral sex and anal sex just as easily. Sure enough, you should be careful and realize that multiple sexual partners and unprotected sex can increase your risks for developing the cancer. Even using protection can sometimes not be enough to keep you from becoming infected with HPV so the wisest thing would be a balanced sex life and careful choices of partners.

cervical-cancer-std-2

Though you can risk a lot by dismissing sexual intercourse as a cause leading to cancer, there's always the choice for regular screening tests that can make HPV infections harmless by detecting them or a precancerous condition early, at a point where they are 100% curable. Still, close to 13,500 women develop cervical cancer every year and approximately 4,500 of them die from it. By taking no chances and by choosing a lifestyle that shows you are grateful for your health and aware of the dangers lurking around, you can have a cancer free life. Don't be too quick to judge others either. Cervical cancer should unite women and not banish the ones struggling with it. If you make it anything close to a tabu, screening will drop and incidence will rise again.

Can You Get Cervical Cancer From Sex?

Published on Jun 10 2010, in the categories: Causes, cervical cancer

Cervical cancer consists in normal cells in the cervix beginning to grow and divide out of control. This can eventually lead to the formation of a mass called a tumor that can start to spread to surrounding tissue and other parts of the body. Cervical cancer is a very common type of cancer in women but its incidence has significantly been reduced by the increasing use of regular Pap screenings by more and more women. This screening can detect precancerous lesions, HPV infections or early stages of cervical cancer if done on a regular basis. These stages of the cancer are all 100% curable.
<-336x280 Large Rectangle - center->
Cervical cancer is most commonly linked to HPV infections. This is a sexually transmitted virus that is found in 90% of cervical cancer patients. Most people call it a cause for cervical cancer though it is only a risk factor. HPV is also not transmitted only by sexual intercourse but also through any kind of sexual contact, even anal sex or oral sex. So you might say you can get cervical cancer from sex though it wouldn't be accurate or recommended. You shouldn't necessarily say sex leads to cervical cancer as another myth could be created around cervical cancer and increase the level of stigmatization of contacting HPV or developing cervical cancer. Since multiple sex partners is also a well known rick factor for cervical cancer many women, especially young women already are likely to feel ashamed about their conditions, sometimes even too ashamed to admit to their parents and close ones that they have HPV. This is very dangerous and we all should make sure that no woman suffering from cervical cancer feels ashamed and excluded.

can-you-get-cervical-cancer-from-sex

Cervical cancer can actually occur also in women that have never had sex in their lives. There are many other risk factor that can expose women to developing breast cancer. These can weigh a lot in the occurence of the disease though not as much as HPV infections. These risk factors include: smoking, a weakened immune system, HPV infections, multiple sex partners, unprotected sexual intercourse, using birth control pills for a long time, multiple pregnancies, lack of Pap screenings and your mother being given diethylstilbestrol while she waas pregnant with you.

can-you-get-cervical-cancer-from-sex-2

No matter the cause, regular Pap screenings are vital and if the results are positive for cancerous cells you should immediate start a treatment and approach the disease with confidence and without feeling ashamed. After all, health is more important than if people judge you. Fortunately, women are wearing more and more cervical cancer awareness accessories and survivors even take great pride in having overcome the disease. The idea that cervical cancer is an indicator of promiscuity is an example of how harmful prejudice can be.

Does Abortion Cause Cervical Cancer

It comes as no surprise that there is a lot of debating on the subject of abortion but this is not an article to support either side of the barricade. Abortion is a choice everybody has to make for themselves and to live with. The only thing that other people can do for those considering the procedure is put out as much information as possible about abortion risks, abortion side-effects, information about support groups and other things to let the person know sometimes the choice is not between having a bay or not but between staying healthy and developing serious disorders.

does-abortion-cause-cervical-cancer-2

Sometimes abortion can be done to prevent such disorders or can even occur involuntarily through miscarriage. The majority of women who have had abortion admit to having thought longer about it and to having chosen more responsibly the medic and setting for the procedure if they had known before about the risks involved.

Side effects you are most likely to experience include: intense bleeding, reduced fertility, breast cancer and placental, uteral or cervical infections or rupture. Aside from well known risk like breast cancer or infertility there are other more distantly related disorders like cancer of the cervix. The link between these two is actually still quite controversial.

does-abortion-cause-cervical-cancer

Some statistics claim that women who have had one abortion are at a 2,3 greater risk of developing cervical cancer. The same studies have also reported a 4,9 increased risk for cancer with women who have had multiple abortions. This is also valid for other types of cancer like that of the ovaries or the liver.

Other specialists, like those from the Guttmatcher institute, claim that there no other relation between abortion and cervical cancer is that cancer incidence is higher with women who went through with the pregnancy and every baby delivered increases the chances of cervical cancer. This does by no means imply somebody could have an abortion to be safer from cervical cancer but just ironically rules out this risk as far as abortions are concerned.

Many medical experts who believe that abortions do lead to cervical cancer feel that this is explained through the damage done to the cervix. The cancer's sole cause might not be the abortion but the mistakes of the doctor doing it. Leaving all moral issues aside the only thing you really have to do if you're considering having an abortion is choosing a good doctor and a proper setting for the operation.

Either way the simple fact that you have come to this crossroad means you are more exposed to cervical cancer. Having an abortion means you have been having unprotected sex and this means a higher chance of being infected with HPV. This is a sexually transmitted virus that is found in 80% of women who develop cervical cancer. Your best chance against the cancer is to be well informed before making any decision, whether it is having unprotected sex or undergoing abortion.

Not all the human papilloma viruses are responsible for producing cervical cancer, the mild types usually produce warts or even go undetected and after a period they disappear.

About 40 types of human papilloma viruses are sexually transmitted and produce serious diseases of the genital area vulva, cervix, vagina, anus, penis. The human papilloma virus types considered high risk responsible for those serious diseases and for the cervical cancer are the HPV TYPE 16, 18, 31, 33, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 68 and 69. The warts in case of contacting human papilloma virus through sexual intercourse with a sexual partner infected with this virus may appear after weeks or even months after the intercourse, or you may be infected with the virus without having any symptom. The human papilloma viruses with low risk of developing cervical cancer that cause warts are the HPV TYPE 6 and 11. In majority of the cases the human papilloma virus doesn’t have any symptoms.

Other causes of the cervical cancer are smoking, having an early debut of sexual activity, having multiple sexual partners in a life time, many children, many abortions, using contraceptive pills for a period longer than 5 years. That is why the health care practitioner recommend women to use condom as a protection for both unwanted pregnancy and sexual transmitted viruses and diseases, including HPV. Woman who are sexually active and have multiple partners are more exposed to contacting the human papilloma virus.

All human papilloma viruses, presenting a high or low risk , may cause abnormal cell changes , but the low risk types are responsible for causing cervical cancer by developing abnormal chances of the cervix cells.

The most efficient screening method against cervical cancer in the history is Pap smear test. It can detect 95% of all cervical cancers and abnormalities of the cervix cells.

Can detect cervical cancers and abnormal changes such as:

atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS)

typical glandular cells of undetermined significance (AGUS)

low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSI)

high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL)

hyperkeratosis

I think that a question comes in everybody’s mind: is it possible to have cervical cancer with normal pap smear test? Is possible to intervene an error? The medical experts think that Pap smear test has a certain irreducible error rate. In test laboratories may occur sometimes error like classify a normal smear as suspicious, or fail to detect abnormal cells. Other errors may occur during screening, collecting the cells sample: collecting sample cells incorrectly , collecting an inadequate quantity of sample cells, not preparing the microscope slide properly.

Because of those errors that sometimes occur is possible to have cervical cancer with normal Pap smear test or is possible not to have cervical cancer with false negative Pap smear test result

To avoid these kind of cases, health care practitioners recommend women to make Pap smear tests regular, at least once a year.

What Causes Cervical Cancer

Published on Apr 15 2010, in the categories: Causes

As we all know the cancer is a very ruthless disease characterized by a multitude of abnormal cells which in the early stage is localized in one part of the body (tissue, or organs), who can multiply and be transported by tissues, blood or lymph and invade all the healthy parts of the organism. The cancer is a group of more than 100 different and distinctive diseases in one.

Cancer can involve any tissue of the body and have many different forms in each body area. Most cancers are named for the type of cell or organ in which they start. If a cancer spreads and affects other parts of the body, the new tumor has the same name as the original (primary) tumor.

The cancer may be particular because of the gender anatomy, for example, the skin cancer is the most common type of malignancy for both men and women, the common type of cancer in men’s case is prostate cancer and in women’s case, the breast cancer.

Skin cancers are often curable, but the lung cancer is the primary death cause for both men and women in the United States today. And, in Romania, the cervical cancer is the leading cause of death among the women.

Only the malignant tumors represent cancer cells. The cancer is not contagious.

Cervical cancer is characterized by the appearance of atypical cells, which multiply to uncontrollable cervix (cervix, the first part of the uterus that opens into the vagina).

Most pre-cancerous cells appear on the cervix, an area suffering constant cyclic changes (depending on the menstrual cycle). This process is physiological, cervical cells may have different mutations, favoring the appearance of abnormal cells, especially for infection with human papilloma virus (sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical lesions and is thus an increased risk for cervical cancer) .

If the cervical cancer is discovered in incipient phases, it can be healed in majority of cases. The most efficient method to discover the cervical cancer is the Pap test. This test can detect the abnormal cervical cells before the appearance of tumor cells, and at this stage the treatment is most efficient. That is why the doctors advise all the women and young girls who have started their sexual activity to take the Pap test at least once a year.

The treatment for this disease is very hard, strong and has disastrous effects on the organism and is most efficient if it’s used in the early stages.

The causes of the cervical cancer are:

-compromised immune system, especially women with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS);
-the use of the oral contraceptive for a longer period of 5 years;
-smoking, especially women with a long history of cigarette consumption;
-sexual behavior increases the risk of cervical cancer: the start of the sexual life before the age of 18, unprotected intercourse, sexual activity with more then 3 different partners throughout life, intercourse with a partner who had more partners.

Like in many other medical cases, the cervical cancer may appear even if the women has had a healthy lifestyle. Not even if you have a healthy lifestyle you are not totally guarded of this disease.

The pregnant women have the same risk of developing cervical cancer as the women who aren’t pregnant.

Take the doctors advise and make the Pap test at least once a year to detect in time the cervical cancer.

5 - The smear test: Who? When and How?

The smear is usually performed by a physician, your gynecologist more often but sometimes your GP. For this he uses a speculum that would prevent the vaginal walls and access to the vagina on a relief area called the curved neck of the uterus. To perform this test is recommended to avoid menstruation or intercurrent bleeding, avoid making a douche, applying creams or suppositories, gels and pads two days before the test of also avoid having sex two days before the test.

In some cases, especially postmenopausal women, cervical preparation with a local hormone or systemically may be useful for a better interpretation of smears.

6 - What happens there after the smear?

Once the smear done, it is important that your doctor will communicate your results by mail. In general, these results should arrive within 15 days to 4 weeks after sampling.

Set upon receipt of the result your next visit to the realization of the next smear. When the smear is normal and there is no history particularly the rate of two years is enough.

If your smear contains minor amendments cells your doctor may suggest the following options:

*
Repeat smear 6 months later to reassess your neck.
* Perform a test for HPV viral smear results clarify and define your risk profile.
* Perform microscopic examination of the cervix called a colposcopy and realize this occasion a sample of the abnormal area of your neck called a biopsy.

If your smear has obvious anomalies or major will be offered a colposcopy immediately.

7 - What happens if the smear is unsatisfactory?

When not found on the smear cells of the cervical transformation zone (metaplastic glandular cells or cells) can be assumed that the sampling was not performed properly. On the other hand, when the smear shows a significant inflammation or a lot of mucus that can interfere with the reading of the interpretation. In these conditions it is said that the smear is unsatisfactory. He should then repeat the smear in order to achieve better conditions.

8 - What causes the changes in cervical cells detected smear?

The human papillomavirus (HPV) cause most cervical cell changes. Infection with HPV is very common among many individuals. In general the virus is transmitted during sexual intercourse through contact. One of the areas most vulnerable to these viruses is the cervical transformation zone.

More than 80 virus types are now identified. Twenty touches the birth canal. Some viral types called low-risk cause genital warts can be observed on the external genitalia in the form of warts, more or less extensive. Other known risk HPV causes changes not visible plane of the cervix may be responsible for long-term cancer or precancerous lesions of the cervix.
